BUILDING HIGH-QUALITY SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAMS TO ENSURE STUDENT SUCCESS

Research consistently shows that students who engage with counselors are more likely to complete college applications, enroll in postsecondary education, and achieve better academic and behavioral outcomes. However, students who would benefit most from counseling—particularly those in marginalized communities—often face the greatest barriers to access, with high student-to-counselor ratios and non-counseling duties diminishing counselors’ effectiveness. This brief identified evidence-based strategies to maximize the impact of school counseling. Comprehensive programs must address academic, social-emotional, and postsecondary development while taking a proactive, data-driven approach to meet student needs. Reducing student-to-counselor ratios improves outcomes and enables counselors to build meaningful relationships with students. Effective programs align with multi-tiered support models, leverage validated interventions, and provide professional development to prepare counselors for the diverse needs of their roles.

The EdResearch for Action Overview Series summarizes the research on key topics to provide K-12 education decision makers and advocates with an evidence base to ground discussions about how to best serve students.
